Ian Jeffrey Slavin was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1968; however, he waited until 1982 to move to Arizona to attend Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona, a military community adjacent to Ft. Huachuca.

After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, Ian lived in Germany for about 1- 1/2 years while he completed an Associate of Arts in Management Information Systems. Afterward, he returned to Flagstaff, Arizona, graduating from Northern Arizona University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science (American Politics concentration), minor in Philosophy. During the time in which he finished college, he also worked for 2-1/2 years as a domestic relations paralegal for attorney Ellen Seaborne, P.C. While in college, he worked as a process server, private investigator and volunteered as a court-appointed special advocate for a child removed from the home due to parental negligence.

Following college, Ian moved to the Phoenix area to work as a child support enforcement officer for the State of Arizona; as a business analyst for United Parcel Service; and as an investment broker for Charles Schwab & Co. until September of 2001. Between jobs, he served as a substitute teacher for junior high- and high-schools in Mesa and Phoenix, Arizona, particularly in social studies, music and math & algebra. After leaving Schwab, he moved to Salem, Oregon, in June, 2004, with the intention of remaining permanently in Oregon.

In law school, Ian focused on family law, criminal law and preparing for trial practice, including participating in an intensive trial practice course (for which the instructional staff included the Honorable William J. Bauer of the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals). Ian also spent a semester in the school's civil practice clinic and as an extern for the Marion County Association of Defenders, a consortium of independent criminal defense attorneys in Marion County (Salem), Oregon.

As a solo practitioner, Ian focuses mainly on family law and general litigation cases, focusing on child custody, contract disputes and negligence cases. As a participant in the Oregon State Bar's Modest Means Program, Ian offers reduced rates for low-income clients. As a former soldier, he also offers reduced rates for servicemen and –women on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
